7 Cayos Siete Hermanos:
Seven Wild Islands at the Edge of the Dominican Republic
Most tourists never make it here. That's exactly why you should.

Rising just 1.5 to 4.4 metres above the Atlantic, the Cayos Siete Hermanos — Seven Brother Islands — are a chain of seven flat, uninhabited coral-sand cays sitting roughly 10 kilometres northwest of Monte Cristi Bay. No hotels. No restaurants. No crowds. Just crystal water, blinding white sand, thriving coral reefs, nesting seabirds, and the kind of silence you can only find at the edge of the Dominican Republic's last true wilderness.
Kite Buen Hombre offers exclusive day trips to the 7 Cayos departing from the fishing village of
Buen Hombre — the closest and most direct access point to the islands. If you're looking for a raw, off-the-beaten-track Caribbean adventure, this is it.

The 7 Islands: Names, Characters & What to Expect
The seven brothers each have their own personality. Here's who they are:
Cayo Character
Torurú - The closest of the group. Calm, flat, perfect for swimming and a first look at the reef.
Monte Chico - Small but ecologically vital. One of the most important nesting sites for migratory seabirds in the DR.
Terrero (Tercero) - Sparse vegetation, good snorkeling along the edges. Quiet and largely untouched.
Monte Grande - The largest cay. More vegetation, more shade, and one of the best spots for birdwatchers.
Ratas - Remote and raw. Coral sand, cacti, iguanas, and almost no visitors.
Cayo Muerto - Minimal vegetation but surrounded by rich reef. The underwater world here outshines the surface.
Cayo Arenas - Also known as Cayo del Faro for its small lighthouse. The westernmost of the group and a classic last stop.
What to Do at the 7 Cayos
🤿 Snorkeling
The reefs surrounding the Cayos Siete Hermanos are among the healthiest and most biodiverse in the Dominican Republic. The underwater landscape shifts between submerged coral forests, sandy bottoms, and dramatic rocky walls. Expect to share the water with sea turtles — particularly hawksbill turtles — as well as pink conchs, lobsters, crabs, and an explosion of tropical fish. The visibility is exceptional on calm days, making this one of the finest snorkeling spots on the entire north coast.
🐠 Scuba Diving
The 7 Cayos sit within the Monte Cristi Underwater National Park — home to the longest stretch of thriving coral barrier reef in the Dominican Republic, spanning 249 km² along the northwest coast. Dive sites here include coral walls, Elkhorn coral formations, and shipwrecks that draw serious divers and marine biologists from around the world. This is off-the-beaten-track diving at its best: virtually no dive crowds, pristine conditions, and a seabed that few people have ever seen.
🐦 Birdwatching
From May through August, the 7 Cayos transform into one of the most spectacular seabird spectacles in the Caribbean. The flat, depression-centered islands become nesting and mating grounds for massive flocks of migratory seabirds arriving from as far north as Florida. Species to watch for include:
-
Brown Noddy
-
Bridled Tern
-
Sooty Tern
-
Pelican
-
White-crowned Pigeon
-
Yellow Warbler
-
Red-legged Gull
Monte Chico and Cayo Tuna are the most ecologically important for nesting. Even outside nesting season, endemic birds and year-round resident species make this a birdwatcher's dream. Bring binoculars.
🏝️ Beach & Swimming
The Cayos are formed entirely from coral sand — brilliantly white, soft underfoot, and virtually deserted. There are no facilities, no beach bars, no sun loungers. Just the ocean, the horizon, and the sound of the wind. Swim off the beach or wade into the shallows and find yourself looking down through perfectly clear water at the reef below. It's the kind of Caribbean beach that barely exists anymore.
🦎 Wildlife Watching on Land
Above the waterline, the cayos are alive too. Walk the shoreline and you'll encounter iguanas sunning on the rocks, hermit crabs shuffling through the sand, and cacti sprouting from the coral. The terrestrial ecosystem is fragile and entirely wild — leave no trace.
A Protected Wildlife Refuge
The Cayos Siete Hermanos are not just beautiful — they are legally protected. The area is officially designated as the Siete Hermanos Cayo Wildlife Refuge, sitting within the broader Monte Cristi National Park and Underwater Park zone. This status protects the islands' nesting seabird colonies, hawksbill turtle habitat, coral reef ecosystems, and endemic species.
As visitors, we operate within these protections with full respect for the environment. No collecting shells or coral. No disturbing nesting birds. No anchoring on reef. Kite Buen Hombre runs all excursions with minimum-impact practices — your experience here depends on keeping it pristine.

The 7 Cayos trip pairs perfectly with a kitesurfing stay in Buen Hombre. Our lagoon is one of the flattest, most beginner-friendly kitesurfing spots in the Caribbean — learn to kite in the mornings, then head to the islands for an afternoon or full-day boat excursion. It's the kind of itinerary that other DR kite schools simply can't offer.
Kite Buen Hombre is the only MITUR-licensed kitesurfing and tourism operation in Monte Cristi Province, established in 2013. We know these waters better than anyone.
