Nobody plans to buy merchandise on a kite trip. And then day three happens, you've burnt the back of your neck, you've watched someone's expensive sunglasses go to the bottom of the lagoon, and suddenly the shelf by the door makes a lot of sense.
So here's what's on it. Kite Buen Hombre apparel — all SPF50, all in our orange and blue, all designed to be worn on the water rather than folded into a drawer at home. And a short shelf of Dominican things worth the space in your bag: cigars rolled by hand down the road, chocolate from friends who grow their own cacao, oregano, and salt from the salinas you drove past on the way in.

Handmade cigars — one man near here grows his own tobacco and rolls the cigars himself. Same hands, start to finish. This is not a factory brand with a Dominican name printed on the box, and once you've had one, it's hard to go back to the ones that are.

Colors chocolate — organic gourmet chocolate made in Mao by friends of ours who grow their own cacao and run their own factory. Bean-to-bar, an hour and a half inland, and in a different league from anything in a duty-free aisle. It also does not survive being left in a hot car, which should tell you something about how real it is.

Monte Cristi salt — from the salinas at Monte Cristi and Buen Hombre, the same salt flats you drove past on the way in. This province has been producing salt for generations; this is that salt, in a bag, for your kitchen.

Dominican oregano — dried, local, and startlingly stronger than the grey dust sold as oregano in most of the world. One pinch does what a whole spoonful does at home.

Everything we print is SPF50. Not as a marketing line — because we watched enough guests go home the color of a boiled lobster and decided the shirts should do some of the work.
The lycras are the ones people end up living in. Long sleeves, full coverage, dries fast, and it means you can stop doing the sunscreen calculation halfway through a session. Most guests buy one on day two and wear it for the rest of the trip.
A few buy the second color before they leave.

You should not be wearing your good sunglasses on the water. We say this gently, having watched a great many expensive pairs make a small splash and disappear forever into the sea that gives nothing back.
So we made our own. Kite Buen Hombre sunglasses, our logo on the side, genuinely decent-looking — and thirty-five dollars, which is exactly the right amount of money to lose to the Caribbean. Buy a pair, wear them out there, and if they go, they go. Much better feeling than watching two hundred dollars sink.

The Kite Buen Hombre logo is a drawing of an actual moment — Miky kiting with Lucky, our first dog — taken from a photograph you'll find elsewhere on this site.
the renowned Estonian animator behind Lotte, drew it for us.
We asked; he said yes; we've been quietly proud of it ever since. So the thing on the front of your shirt is a real photograph of this beach, redrawn by hand by someone whose work many Europeans know by heart.
