More Than Kiting — Trips, Tours & Activities

Boat trips to hidden islands, a manatee sanctuary, a border market, tobacco fields, and a farm that feeds your dinner plate.

Buen Hombre is where most of these lives — remote enough that these are still real, local experiences, not stops on a tour-bus route. Cabarete adds its own side: surf, cafés, and an easy base for exploring further afield. Wherever you're staying, our team organizes it.

Cayo Arena / Paradise Island — the sandbank that disappears at high tide. Snorkeling, swimming, and — for kiters — a downwinder route home. Full details on our Cayo Arena page.

Playa Popa — a downwind boat-and-kite trip along open coastline.

Grand Grossier — a more remote stretch of coast and crystal water, for guests who want to go further.

Los Siete Hermanos (7 Cayos) — a scattered island chain off Monte Cristi's El Morro National Park — one of the least-visited parts of this coast.

La Ensenada — a quiet fishing-village beach near Punta Rucia, calm and shallow, and a good stop on the way to or from Cayo Arena.

KAYAKING, SUP & PADDLING

Buen Hombre's lagoon works for this the same way it works for learning to kite: flat, shallow, and safe.

Manatee Bay - Estero Hondo Marine Sanctuary

One of the only places in the Caribbean to see West Indian manatees in the wild. A boat trip through mangrove channels along the Estero Hondo Marine Sanctuary gives you a real chance — not a guarantee, they're wild animals — of spotting them in their actual habitat, on the route between Buen Hombre and Puerto Plata.

Bird watching in Buen Hombre, Estero Hondo and Monte Cristi

BIRD WATCHING

The wetlands and mangroves around Monte Cristi and Estero Hondo are some of the least disturbed birding habitat on the north coast — herons, egrets, frigatebirds, and seasonal migratory species depending on when you visit.

PUNTA RUCIA & LA ENSENADA

Punta Rucia is a fishing village about 15 km before Buen Hombre — restaurants, a beach, and the departure point most other operators use for Cayo Arena trips (ours leaves directly from Buen Hombre). La Ensenada, right next door, is quieter still: a fishing-village beach with calm, shallow water.

MONTE CRISTI — EL MORRO & THE SALT FLATS

The provincial capital, about 45 minutes from Buen Hombre. El Morro — the flat-topped headland the national park is named for — looks out over Los Siete Hermanos, the island chain offshore. The town itself has colonial-era architecture, working salt flats, and a slower pace than anywhere on the tourist coast.

DAJABÓN — THE BORDER MARKET

On market days, thousands of people cross the bridge over the Massacre River between Ouanaminthe, Haiti and Dajabón, Dominican Republic, to trade at one of the largest binational markets in the Caribbean. It's not a polished tourist attraction — it's real commerce, real history, and a genuinely different side of the country than any beach can show you.

Tobacco Field & Chocolate Factory

Tobacco leaves drying in a hut in Buen Hombre Cabarete.

Tobacco fields — a trip out to see how Dominican tobacco is actually grown and rolled — fields, drying barns, and, if timed right, a hand-rolling demonstration. Works well as a stop on a Santiago-route transfer day, or as its own excursion.

Colors Assorted artisan chocolates and sweets in clear boxes.

Chocolate factory — a visit to a local cacao producer to see the process from pod to bar, with tastings along the way — one of the region's better-kept non-beach experiences.

The One Trip No Other Operator on This Coast Can Offer.

Most of what lands on your plate at Buen Hombre started the same morning, a short drive away. Our own finca grows a real share of what our in-house chef cooks — this isn't a tour of someone else's farm. It's the one that feeds you.

  • Our own land

  • Local produce, grown not sourced

  • Same-day, straight to the kitchen

  • Guided by our in-house chef

4-WHEELER ADVENTURES

Rent a 4-wheeler and cover ground a scooter can't — coastal roads, the countryside around Monte Cristi, tracks a car won't attempt.

ON THE CABARETE SIDE

Cabarete brings its own version of “more than kiting” — Encuentro Beach for surfing, cafés and restaurants walkable from the kite center, and an easy base for exploring Sosúa and the rest of Puerto Plata province. It's the more convenient half of the two-destination experience: less remote, more social, still worth a full day off the water.

HOW IT WORKS

01

Tell us what you're into

02

We build the day (or the week) around wind and tides

03

We organize the boat, the driver, or the guide — whatever it takes

04

You show up and do the thing

WHY KITE BUEN HOMBRE

  • Since 2013 — local relationships built over a decade, not a rotating list of tour operators

  • One team — the same people teaching your lessons organize your days off the water

  • Buen Hombre roots — most of these trips start a few minutes from where you're staying, not a bus ride away

  • Real, not packaged — a border market and a family finca aren't excursions built for tourists; we just know how to bring you along
