What Is the Closest Airport to Cabarete?

The closest airport to Cabarete is Puerto Plata's Gregorio Luperón International Airport (POP), about 18 km west of town. The drive takes about 30 minutes on the paved coastal highway (Carretera 5).

Three other international airports also work for a trip to Cabarete. Here is how they compare.

The four airports compared

• Puerto Plata (POP): about 18 km, around 30 minutes. The easiest choice for first-time visitors, families and short stays.

• Santiago (STI): about 1.5 hours by car. Often has good flight prices.

• Santo Domingo (SDQ): about 4 hours by car. The widest choice of international flights.

• Punta Cana (PUJ): about 5.5 hours by car. Worth it only when the flights are much cheaper.

All times are approximate. Rush hour around Santiago, Santo Domingo or Puerto Plata (roughly 7–9am and 5–7pm) can add 30 to 60 minutes.

Uber, taxis and buses

Uber does not operate in Cabarete or Puerto Plata. It only works in Santiago and Santo Domingo. Taxis wait at every airport: agree on the price before you get in, and have your address written in Spanish.

Public buses (guaguas) run between Puerto Plata and Cabarete during daylight hours. They are a fine budget option, but awkward with kite bags and boards.

Private airport transfer

Kite Buen Hombre runs private transfers from all four airports, 24/7. We track your flight, our vehicles take board bags and kite bags, and we can stop for groceries, a SIM card or an ATM on the way. Book at least 48 hours before you land. See our transfer options.
