Life at the End of the Road: Buen Hombre Before the Grid, and Now
The road ends at the beach in Buen Hombre. That is not a figure of speech. When we arrived in 2013, the end of the road also meant the end of most things people take for granted: reliable power, running water, internet, a phone signal.
How It Was
We started a kite school here with almost no phone signal and no internet. The only thing to eat was the day's fresh fish.
Water by truck. Much of the village still had no running water, and what did come was rationed per household each week. We bought water trucks from 20 km away so our guests could shower, and for years the water reached the bathrooms by hand.
Power on a schedule. Electricity came in six-hour shifts, six on and six off, on a schedule that changed from day to day. We counted our light bulbs to last on the batteries until the power came back.
No light pollution. The upside of having almost no light: night skies full of stars and falling stars.
Cleaning the Beach
When we arrived, the beach needed a lot of work. Little by little, with help from guests, locals and kite instructor course participants who made beach cleanups a tradition, it became the clean kite beach it is today. Heiki Ernits, the animator who drew our logo, also drew a wordless clean-beach illustration for the village, so the message works for everyone.
How It Is Now
Starlink across the camp. From no internet at all to fast Starlink Wi-Fi, enough for video calls and remote work. See our kiting and remote work guide.
Bottled drinking water and meals included. Three meals a day cooked on site, and drinking water always available.
Rooms on the beach. Beach bungalows and lofts a few steps from the lagoon. See the Buen Hombre hotel.
Power almost around the clock. The village now has electricity almost 24 hours a day. After years of six hours on and six hours off, that still feels like a small miracle.
What Hasn't Changed
The road still ends at the beach. There are no resorts, no traffic and no nightlife district, just a fishing village, a lagoon and the stars. That is still the point of coming here.
