Cayo Arena is a tiny coral sandbank in the Atlantic, off the northwest coast of the Dominican Republic. You'll also see it called Cayo Paraíso or Paradise Island. There is only one way to get there: by boat. Most visitors leave from Punta Rucia, about 20–30 minutes away by speedboat, usually on a full-day tour from Puerto Plata, Sosúa or Cabarete. The quieter way is from Playa Buen Hombre, about 14 km west along the coast. And if you kitesurf, you can skip the boat ride home and ride back instead.

In 2023, Cayo Arena was ranked #27 on The World's 50 Best Beaches list, voted by travel journalists and experts from around the world.

We've been running boat trips and kite downwinders on this stretch of coast since 2013. This is everything we tell guests before they go.

Where Is Cayo Arena?

Cayo Arena sits in the open Atlantic between Punta Rucia, in Puerto Plata province, and Playa Buen Hombre, in Monte Cristi province. It isn't an island with palm trees and a beach bar. It's a strip of white sand built on a coral reef, with a ring of shallow, see-through water all around it.

It also changes with the tide. At low tide, more sand rises out of the sea. At high tide, much of it disappears. There are no hotels, no roads and no buildings — just sand, a few simple palm-roof shades, reef, ocean and sky. Standing on it feels like standing in the middle of the sea, because you are.

If you're searching online, Cayo Arena, Cayo Paraíso, Isla Paraíso and Paradise Island are all the same place.

This is how small Cayo Arena really is. Our team rider Davisito kites straight over the sandbank, from the water on one side to the water on the other, in a single jump. For more from this coast, follow Kite Buen Hombre on YouTube.

Three Ways to Get to Cayo Arena

1. From Punta Rucia: the classic tour

Punta Rucia is a small fishing village on La Isabela Bay, and it's the main departure point for Cayo Arena. Speedboats cross in roughly 20–30 minutes, and many tours add a ride through the mangroves along the way.

Most of these trips are sold as full-day excursions with hotel pickup in Puerto Plata, Sosúa or Cabarete. That means about two hours on the road each way before you reach the boat, with lunch back in Punta Rucia usually included.

Good for: visitors staying around Puerto Plata who want a packaged day out. Trade-off: it's the busiest way to see Cayo Arena. Midday is when most tour boats arrive together.

2. From Buen Hombre: the quieter way

Playa Buen Hombre is a fishing village and kite beach about 14 km west of Cayo Arena along the coast. Our boat trips leave from the beach in front of our school: small groups, snorkel gear included, shade on board, and a captain who knows this water.

Because we're on the other side of the sandbank from the big tour departures, we can time the trip around the crowds. An early start usually means softer light, calmer water and much more of the sandbank to yourselves.

  • Price: from $65 per person, based on a minimum of 4 people (smaller groups pay a little more per person)

  • Private boat: available for couples, families and groups

  • Sunrise or sunset for two: from $190 per couple

Good for: couples, families, snorkelers, photographers and non-kiters, and anyone already staying in Buen Hombre. Details and booking: Boat Trips & Downwinders.

3. By kite: ride home from the island

This is the one you won't find on the tour sites. The boat takes you out to Cayo Arena. You rig on the sand, launch into the turquoise water, and ride roughly 14 km downwind along the coast back to Buen Hombre, with the support boat alongside the whole way.

Every downwinder has a professional kite assistant riding with the group and a captain who is a professional kiter himself. It costs the same as the boat trip.

Who it's for: independent intermediate and advanced riders who are comfortable in open water. If you're still learning, start in Buen Hombre's flat, shallow lagoon with kitesurfing lessons and save Cayo Arena for the end of your trip. Want to get there faster? Our advanced coaching gets riders downwinder-ready.

Getting to the Departure Point

Cayo Arena is a long way from the big resort areas, so most of your travel time on the day is spent on the road, not on the boat. As a rough guide:

  • From Puerto Plata or Sosúa: about 2 hours by road to Punta Rucia, and about 3 hours to Buen Hombre.

  • From Cabarete: about 3–4 hours to Buen Hombre. We can drive you in our own van (up to 14 people) or jeep (up to 7). Transport is priced by group size and isn't included in the trip price — see Transportation.

  • From Santo Domingo: about 250 km to Punta Rucia, roughly 4.5 hours by car.

  • From Punta Cana: it's on the opposite side of the country. As a day trip it's an exhausting day on the road. Give the north coast at least a couple of nights instead.

Flying in? Puerto Plata (POP) is the closest airport, and Santiago (STI) also works well for this coast. Our guides to getting to Buen Hombre and the closest airport to Cabarete cover flights, transfers and drive times.

Our honest tip: the easiest way to see Cayo Arena is to stay in Buen Hombre for a few nights. On trip day you walk to the beach, step on the boat, and skip the long drive completely.

Best Time to Visit Cayo Arena

  • Time of day (boat trip): mornings, all year round. The water is often calmer, the light is softer, and you get there before the midday boats.

  • Time of day (kiting): afternoons, when the trade wind is strongest and steadiest. Check our live wind and camera before you plan.

  • Tide: the sandbank is biggest around low tide. Ask us about tide timing when you book.

  • Season: we run trips all year, weather and sea permitting. The final call on the day depends on wind and swell, and we'll always tell you honestly if another day is better.

What to Do on Cayo Arena

  • Snorkel. The shallow reef around the sandbank has coral, sponges and tropical fish, and it's one of the main reasons to come. Snorkel gear is included on our trips.

  • Swim. Turquoise water in every direction, much of it shallow.

  • Walk the sandbar. A few minutes end to end, with nothing but ocean around you.

  • Take photos. White sand, reef and a 360° horizon. Go early for the best light.

  • Kite it. For intermediate+ riders, Cayo Arena is the start of the downwinder home.

Even get married. We have organised weddings on the island. At one in 2016 the bride was 'stolen' from the beach and brought back on the back of a kite instructor.

Staying longer? Cayo Arena is one of several trips from Buen Hombre. Playa Popa, Grand Grossier and Punta Rucia & Manatee Bay are each $85, and the 7 Cayos (Siete Hermanos) full-day trip starts at $150, with an overnight camping option.

What to Bring

There are no toilets on the boat or on the sandbank, and nothing to buy on Cayo Arena itself, so plan a stop before you leave and pack:

  • Reef-safe sunscreen

  • A rash guard or lycra — the sun out there is strong and there's very little shade

  • A hat and sunglasses (our $35 Kite Buen Hombre sunglasses exist exactly so you don't risk your good pair on the water)

  • Drinking water

  • A towel

  • A waterproof phone case

Look After the Reef

Cayo Arena only looks the way it does because the reef around it is still alive. Please help keep it that way:

  • Use reef-safe sunscreen, and put it on well before you get in the water.

  • Don't stand on, touch or kick the coral. Float over it.

  • Leave starfish, shells and coral exactly where you found them.

  • Whatever comes out to the sandbank goes back on the boat with you.

Can You Stay Overnight on Cayo Arena?

No. There are no hotels or buildings on the sandbank, and it's a day-trip destination only. If you want to be close, stay in Buen Hombre: we have beach accommodation right at the kite spot, and Where to Stay lists every option. If sleeping out on the water is the dream, our 7 Cayos trip has an overnight camping option on the islands.

Cayo Arena or Grand Grossier?

Both are sandbank days out from Buen Hombre, but they suit different people. Cayo Arena is the classic: easy snorkeling, postcard scenery, great for mixed groups and non-kiters. Grand Grossier is wilder and more remote, with open, uncrowded water for kiters. We compare them properly in Grand Grossier or Cayo Arena? How to Choose Your Boat Trip.
