Most kite sessions happen in one place: you launch, ride back and forth, and land where you started. A downwinder is different. You start at one point and ride with the wind behind you to a finish point kilometres down the coast. It is the closest thing kitesurfing has to a road trip, and for many riders it becomes the highlight of their holiday.

This guide explains how a downwinder works, what level you need, what the boat and crew do, and how to prepare for your first one on the Buen Hombre coast. If you already know you want to go, see all routes and prices on our Boat Trips & Downwinders page.

What is a kite downwinder?

A downwinder is a one-way kitesurf ride that follows the wind. Instead of working upwind to stay in front of the beach, you let the wind carry you along the coast, riding over open water, past reefs and islands, to a planned finish point. Distances range from a few kilometres to a full day on the water.

Because you are not returning to the start, a downwinder needs logistics: someone has to bring you, your gear and your bags back, and someone should be close by if you crash, break a line or get tired. That is why good downwinders are run with a support boat.

How a downwinder works in Buen Hombre

On our trips the boat either carries you out to the start or follows you while you ride, depending on the route. Every trip includes:

The support boat stays close to the group
  • A professional kite assistant who rides with the group

  • A captain who is a professional kiter himself, so he reads the wind and the water like a rider

  • Space on the boat for bags, water, a spare kite and anyone who wants to rest

  • Pick-up at any point if you need a break or conditions change

Boat trips and downwinders are the same offering sold by destination: the price is identical whether you ride all the way or travel part of it on the boat. Non-kiting friends can come along on the boat.

Where you can go

Buen Hombre sits on a long, wild stretch of the north-west coast with flat lagoons, sandbars and offshore islands. Popular routes include:

What level do you need?

You do not need to be an expert, but a downwinder is not a first-week activity either. Before your first one you should be able to:

  • Water start on both sides without help

  • Ride comfortably in both directions and hold your line for several minutes

  • Control your speed and stop when you want to

  • Relaunch your kite from the water

  • Know the basics of self-rescue

Riding upwind is not required on every route, because the wind carries you, but being able to hold your ground makes the trip safer and more fun. If you are not there yet, a few hours of coaching gets most riders ready. See our kitesurfing lessons and advanced coaching.

Wind and the best time to go

Buen Hombre is one of the windiest spots in the Dominican Republic. The strongest, most reliable wind comes from mid-June to mid-September, and there are good windy days through much of the rest of the year. We plan each downwinder on the day, based on the forecast and the live readings from our own station.

What to bring

  • Your kite in the right size for the day, plus a smaller one on the boat if you have it

  • Board, harness and a leash or safety system you trust

  • Lycra or a light wetsuit top, sunscreen and sunglasses with a strap

  • Water and a snack, which can stay on the boat

  • A phone in a waterproof pouch if you want photos

No gear? Everything can be rented from our kite shop and rental center.

Safety on a downwinder

Open-water riding is safer with a plan. Before we leave, the crew briefs the group on the route and the meeting points, and the group stays within sight of the boat and the kite assistant. If anyone has a problem, the boat is minutes away. The decision to go, shorten the route or turn back is always made on the day, based on the wind and the group.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a kite downwinder?

It depends on the route. Cayo Arena is about 14 km and Playa Popa about 17 km; longer trips such as the Seven Brothers islands take a full day.

Can beginners do a downwinder?

Not in the first days of learning. You should water start on both sides, ride in both directions and relaunch your kite. With some coaching many riders are ready within their holiday.

What happens if I fall or get tired?

The support boat and a professional kite assistant stay with the group. You can rest on the boat or be picked up at any point.

Can friends who don't kite come along?

Yes. Non-kiters can ride on the boat, enjoy the islands and beaches, and meet the riders at the finish.
